Hearts of Stone is the third album released by New Jersey rock–R&B band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, released in 1978. In 1987 Rolling Stone voted Hearts of Stone among the top 100 albums from 1967—1987 (#92). In 2000, the New York Times numbered it among the best albums the band had released. The song was originally written by one of my alltime favorites: Bruce Springsteen, who thougth it would be better of when sung by Johnny.

Southside Johnny in the Netherlands

Southside Johnny still visits us in Amsterdam every year in the Paradiso, usually around October and November and his their life act is among the best. The Jukes created beautiful records, however they have not been able to crack the national consciousness and sell enough records to justify true star-level backing. They have bounced from label to label in the decades since, and scratch out their existence in little known bars not much higher in stature than the clubs they played on the way up. Yet they left us with some beautiful and brilliant songs to make sure that their contribution to the music of the Jersey Shore would not be forgotten.

The song

The song also featured in the movie "Between the lines (1977)". A movie about a small, alternative newspaper in Boston being bought by a publishing mogul who wants to turn and change it's political tone.

The lycrics "Hearts of Stone", Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes

You stare in the mirror at the lines in your face
And you try so hard to see
The way things were when we were at your place
Everyday was just you and me
And you cry because things ain't like before
Well, don't you know it can't be that way anymore
But don't worry baby

I can't talk now, I'm not alone
So put your ear close to the phone
This is the last dance, the last chance
For hearts of stone

If there was something, baby, that I could do
Something that would last, honey, I would
But you should know better than to think that you
Can return to the past
So close your eyes and I'll be there
Hold you once more, not go anywhere
I wish I could, babe

But I can't talk now, I'm not alone
So put your ear close to the phone
This is the last dance, the last chance
For hearts of stone

And you cry because things get so strange so fast
And you cry because nothing good ever lasts
Well, I know babe
Yes, I know, babe

But I can't talk now, I'm not alone
So put your ear close to the phone
'Cause this is the last dance, the last chance
For hearts of stone

This is the last dance, the last chance
For hearts of stone
