Why is the Astrological Industry on the defence?

Monday, January 10, 2011 · Category Stumbled upon · comments 0

Anybody with even a fake interest in the astrological world, knows the horoscope signs and maybe even the Chinese zodiac signs. A NASA study in 2005 proofed the zodiac signs being 13. Now astronome Parkle Kunkle of the Minneapolis Community & technical College repeats the same conclusion. Yet, don't expect your horoscope reading to change. Scientists say this rotation has been known about since 500 B.C. and the horoscope calendar hasn't moved.

Astrology and our zodiac sign

The Babylonians lived over 3,000 years ago. They divided the zodiac into 12 equal parts, like cutting a pizza into 12 equal slices. They picked 12 constellations in the zodiac, one for each of the 12 "slices." So, as Earth orbits the Sun, the Sun would appear to pass through each of the 12 parts of the zodiac.

Are we looking at the wrong horoscope sign?

If we count all the traditional constellations, there are 13 in the zodiac, not 12. So here are the dates (give or take one day each year) when the Sun is between Earth and each of these 13 constellations.

Astrological industry: Threat or opportunity?

Now here is the part that I don't always understand. Everytime an industry is under attack - either by proposed changes, reforms, disasters or scientific proof - it tends to go into defence. This might be explained as we act as humans inside companies and industries and we tend to go into the defence when we feel "attacked".

Opponents of an Astrological change of Zodiac signs

Opponents can surely be found between the ideological believers. I can imagine: "If you now say you have been selling us crap, your credibility will probably drop quickly and the whole movement main turn into a political landscape".

Old traditions

Since the Babylonians already had a 12-month calendar (based on the phases of the Moon), each month got a slice of the zodiac all to itself. So when Bruce's birthday is September 23, he says, "I'm a Libra," he means that on his birthday, the imaginary line from Earth, through the Sun, and out into space on the other side of the Sun points to the constellation Libra. The trouble is, it doesn't! When the Babylonians first invented the 12 signs of zodiac, a birthday between about July 23 and August 22 meant being born under the constellation Leo. Now, 3,000 years later, the sky has shifted because Earth's axis (North Pole) doesn't point in quite the same direction.

Industry opportunities

Yet, if you come to think of the proof and proposed changes for our astrological signs, the whole industry can get a big boost. I am just imagining: Software, calculations and databases need to be changed (employment) and visitor rates - i presume - may explode (what is my real horoscope sign, does it fit any better? How this it effect by self knowledge?) What else can you dream of in terms of growth getting more "eyeballs"?
